About
My name is Andrew Demma and I'm a 27 year old multimedia illustrator living in Anchorage, Alaska. My artwork centers on seemingly mundane situations, that, underneath, imply subtle emotional complexity.
I have been interested in drawing since I was very young; early on, I was focused on wildlife. I was driven to learn to render animals with skillful realism - but to take it past anatomical accuracy, toward dynamic motion and even social behaviors. In addition to "borrowing" my dad's Audobon Society field guides, I rented Drawing Wildlife by JC Amberlyn at the library. Later, I recieved a copy of The Weatherly Guide to Drawing Animals by Joe Weatherly. These books formed the foundation of my self-driven early art education.
As a teen, my interests pivoted. I started to gravitate to "darker" genres of media, as was popular at the time. I became interested in 2D animation, which was the first time I had ever considered a career in art. At the same time, I became more social and engaged with other people. I started to write stories and develop my own characters - and with that, the subject of my art began to change. I started to learn to draw the human figure, facial features, and expressions.
In high school, I took my first art classes. I made friends that had similar interests, and got to experience the benefit of critique alongside my peers. My first attempts at full compositions happened during this time, and I learned valuable skills like linear perspective.
